Li's, Northbourne

LI'S claims to be "the takeaway where the food is as good as a restaurant" - a statement which just had to be put to the test.

Based at the junction of Wimborne Road and Northbourne Avenue, this new takeaway scored points straightaway with their prompt delivery.

And the food didn't disappoint eiher. The Hong Kong style sweet and sour chicken really was resstaurant quality with lots of crunchy vegetables and just the right amount of sweet and sour sauce.

The chicken pieces, which were coated in a light batter before being fried and soaked in sweet and sour sauce were nicely chewy - just how they should be.

The strips of beef with cashew nuts in yellow bean sauce were a nice contrast. Yellow bean sauce can sometimes be a bit overpowering but this was deliciously rich and you didn' have to dig for the nuts.

We also had chicken with pineapple, which was my favourite dish. The chicken practically melted in your mouth it was so tender and it came with huge pineapple chunks in a light sauce.

Side portions of stir-fried mushrooms and egg fried rice were tasty accompaniments and were perfectly cooked. If I was really looking for faults, I would say that the plain chow mein was a little bit soggy and contained slightly too much onion for my taste.

I still don't think anything can compare to a slap-up meal in a chinese restaurant, but if you fancy staying in, this comes very close.

It has to be said that it was the nicest take-away chinese we have ever had here. A big thank you to the chef and your staff.
